Disney Gets Easier With Two New Features

Disney has been testing the new Magicbands and plans on incorporating fully soon.  This will eliminate park tickets, resort cards, and even your credit card if you wish.  No more swiping a ticket, signing the back, and taking your finger print.  Can't wait to see this tan line.

The Disney Magicbands will be offered in different colors, yet it is unknown if this is color of choosing or random like the ticket faces.  The bands will be married to the My Disney Experience accounts.

If you are not familiar with My Disney Experience, it is an online, via computer or app, place to make plans, reservations, and keep track of Meal Deals, character meet-and-greets, travel itineraries, and search for whatever else Disney has to offer.  There are also park and resort maps so you don't have to carry the paper map or try to find a new one once you've lost the first.  Reservations to restaurants and plans for parades, fireworks, and shows are all at your finger tips.  No needing to remember, check times on the map, or asking for assistance.  Just plan, save, and go when your phone chimes up.

The best part for families with independent teens venturing off on their own, or large parties, is you can include others in your reservations and plans.  Let's say you want to go the the 3:00 Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade in the Magic Kingdom, and you want your two teens to join you, your spouse, and your youngest, but didn't plan it before heading separate ways.  Simply open your My Disney Experience app, click my plans--parades--Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade at 3:00--and invite others.  They'll know when to be where.  Of course this app will need to be downloaded to each phone and all accounts will need to be married via My Disney Experience online, but once you've got everyone's avatar set up you'll be good to go.  It's all free, and only takes a few minutes to set up and sync.

I'm not quite sure how the band will use the app, but it will interesting and most likely helpful to lessen the "chores" of seeing everything while in a Disney Park, especially if you are limited in time.

Pixie Hollow

Take a stroll down Disneyland's Main Street toward the welcoming statue of Walt and Mickey.  Just before you get to Sleeping Beauty's Castle take a right and head toward Matterhorn Mountain into Fantasyland.  There, nestled behind Tommowland's Astro Orbitor, is Pixie Hollow.  A place where you are shrunk down to the size of Tinkerbell and her fairy friends.  Discover the word through the eyes of the pint-size sprites and learn their secrets.

It's not a large attraction.  There are no rides and no shops.  Just a small garden where you have the chance to meet the fairies of Pixie Hollow.  Make sure to bring a camera, and check times for meet-and-greets to make sure you're not missing a chance to see a fairy face-to-face.

My Next Project: Hair Piece Inspired by Disney's Ariel

I've been trying to come up with some way to make an outfit truly Ariel inspired.  Not to knock the color schemes of the movie, but purple (mermaid top) and baby pink (land dress #2) just don't do it for me.  Her blue dress is great, but I'd rather save those ideas for Alice, Wendy, or Belle.

My idea has been a toned-down pair of green capri's with a slight flair at the bottom with a purple top; something tight across the bust with a slimming princess cut, wavy slightly past the waist, and a small shear, pleated sleeve.  The accessories I have so far are a teal beaded necklace with star fish and shells.....that's it.  This DIY video popped up in the Disney Homepage by Evelina Barry and I was in love instantly.  The best part is the "starfish" is clay and not the real dead animal pinned to the back of your head.  This makes it not so creepy, animal friendly, and not as fragile.

The supplies needed are pretty common in any crafter's closet: craft glue, clay, mod podge, glaze, and beads or jewels or any pretties you may have that you think are aquatic and or Little Mermaid-esque.  I think I'll dig up pearls and crystals that match my necklace and maybe I can find a small fork and little red crab too.

Apps

I am a bargain shopper.  I research before making practically any purchase.  Being an educated cheapskate the only Apple product I own is a ipod that was a gift.  Things are about to change, and it's all Disney's fault.

My first Disney app letdown was in January.  I received an email for Pixel'd and thought to check it out.  As soon as I clicked the link, my enthusiasm was dashed.  iphone app only.  So I moved on.

The few months, my husband and I have discussed switching cell carriers.  We've looked at what phones were available with what packages...... again educated cheapskate.  He is as insistent on getting another iphone as I have been opposed to the single bottom contraption.

...then...

Bloggin'-about today I came across Disney's Insider How Will you Tell Your Story blog about a new app that recognizes pics and videos taken during the same event so you can share in bulk and make a "story."  The catch?  Only available for the iphone.

This would have been fantastic a few weeks ago when I took 85 pics on my phone and had to upload each one . . . which I have yet to actually do.  Oh, and this weekend during Little Man's 3rd birthday party at the railroad museum, the story app would have been perfect.

Petty yes, but I'd also like to have a Disney phone case, usually only available for, you guessed it, the iphone.

...I caved...

Today on his break, my husband calls and I immediately inform him that we will be switching carriers and not only will he be keeping to his iphone devotion, but I am now a dedicated convert.

...thanks Disney...

One more way to incorporate your franchise into the very skin of my livelihood.  But I'm not bitter.  Rather excited that I've got another way to live inside my Disney World.

Free Tour and Free Food

Another reblog, but I had to.  I really think we could squeeze this in while we are there next time.  Nom nom nom!

Do it for the Zebra Dome

The Lone Ranger

Let me start by saying I'd love to hear what someone else thinks about Johnny Depp playing a Native American. . . . . .

Besides being torn about that--I'M SUPER PUMPED FOR THE LONE RANGER!  So I'm caving to the countdown.

The preview is mind blowing.  I like a good action packed western with cheesy lingo and lots of dirt.  This looks like it has both.  Based on what the preview shows, I can picture this being to land version franchise of Pirates. . . . . but that might only be the way Depp makes it feel.

So let's talk actors ^^^ these three actors.

Armie Hammer is so pretty.  His roles in big movies though always have him scrubbed in dirt.  OK maybe not in The Social Network, but do we have to count that?  Otherwise his roles have been the pretty boy on TV.  I've always pictured the Lone Ranger as more of a bad ass than a pretty boy, so hopefully it pans out for him.  Prince Alcott in Mirror Mirror is when I fell for Hammer because as a Disney Romantic you want the prince and the princess to end up together--and he was rather dreamy--dirt and all.

Johnny Depp.......oh beautiful Johnny Depp, From Cry Baby to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, your roles have been the most broad on the acting spectrum I have ever seen: and I love it.  As most women my age if it wasn't Cry Baby it was Edward Scissorhands that made us fall for you.  Even as Sweeny Todd or the Mad Hatter I couldn't get enough Depp screen time.  But as an American Tribal side-kick?  I don't want to point out the obvious lack of native looking skin color here, but the bad accent, or the lack of accent and the poor stereotypical bad-Indian grammar known eons ago in not-so-PC westerns, may not be Depp's best role.  We'll just have to wait until July to know for sure I guess.

Helen Bonham Carter.  One of my favorite British actors, but probably my favorite British actress.  She of course plays a better bad guy than a good guy.  Other than that I really can't say anything about the upcoming.

All in all, The Lone Ranger is going to go one of two ways.  It will either explode into instant popularity like the Pirates franchise or it will be another action packed flop like John Carter.  Let's hope it's not the latter.

New in Disneyland

I follow tons of Disney bloggers, both official and otherwise, who keep me up-to-date on everything Disney.  Today Disney Gals posted this on Facebook: New Show in Disneyland

I know it's a year away, but this will have to be a stop we make when we take Little Man!

We made some changes to our plans.  Every time we've been we've visited a new beach.  We felt like we should keep up the new tradition.  Since Miami is a little further than Clearwater, we're cutting or Orlando stay by two nights.  So let's see what we can squeeze in......

Day 4: Spend the day in Disney's Epcot for the food and Wine Festival.  Stay for their night show.

Day 6:  Spend the day at Universal Studios.  Dinner and mini golf on the City Walk.

Day 7:  Spend the day at Island of Adventure.  Dinner at Three Broomsticks.

Day 8:  Spend the day at DisneyQuest.  Head to Miami/Homestead.  Check in Travelodge Homestead.

Day 9:  Decide to see as many of the following:  Everglades, Coral Castle, Robert is Here, Biscayne National Underwater Park, Shnebly's, Fruit & Spice Park.

Day 10:  Early Rise to drive to the Keys...... this is still something I haven't passed with the husband.  Maybe I'll surprise him?  Check into Loew's Miami South Beach.

Change of plans

So the husband and I have made a few changes to the itinerary post awhile back.  We had booked a room in a "time-share" resort that included 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with the intention that some friends would be joining us.  Turns out, we are going alone--which is as perfect as friends coming with us.  So we changed the hotel to a place that costs a little less.

We extended our stay since it closer to all the places we are going for the full duration of our Orlando stay.  Overall we shortened the Orlando stay and changed our Beach stay from Clearwater Beach to Miami Beach.  We thought it would be cool to see a different beach.  So far each trip to Florida has been a different beach, so we decided to keep it up.  So far we've been to Saint Augustine, Clearwater, Panama City, and Mexico Beach.  This time we are going to try for Cocoa Beach and Miami Beach.

We did a lot of research on where to go and what to see before deciding on Miami Beach.  We considered St. Pete, Tierra Verde, Pompano, and Naples.  We actually picked Miami because of Homestead.  Homestead is the home Robert Is Here fruit stand, the Fruit & Spice Park, Coral Castle, Biscayne National Underwater Park, and (drum roll) Schnebly Redland's Winery and Brewery.  Oh, and if there is time, Airboats in the Everglades and Miami Exotic Racing.  Now you can see why we shortened our stay in Orlando.

I'll post an updated itinerary once we've flip flopped some stuff around and decide what we wont be doing this time Orlando.

Blast From The Past

My nephew's birthday is coming up in a few weeks.  He's going to be 3.  Since the first day he was born, we've been planning a family vacation to Disneyland in 2014.  Now we only have a year to wait.  Why wait?  The main reason we wanted to wait for the new the new CarsLand that opened a few months ago.  The second is that at 4, he'll remember more when looking back at pictures.  The final reason is because we are a planning a trip with 9-11 adults who all have very different schedules.

So to honor the one year countdown to William's first Disney trip, I wanted to post my favorite ride from when I was that age.  I actually have memories of my first Disneyland visit when I was 18 months old.  But i also remember swallowing a penny when I was 14 months old, so I have a freakishly great memory.  We had family living in Southern California when I was little so by the time I was William's age I could give guided tours.

In all respects this ride really hasn't gone away, and if we went to Disneyland I'd still get the full effect, if not a better one......

drum roll...........

Submarine Voyage.....that was anti climatic.  But truthfully, this ride was the most interesting to me growing up.  Great tumblr site for flask back Submarine Voyage pics.

The New(er) finding Nemo ride I'm sure is great.  To be honest, I haven't been to Disneyland in decades because our family isn't there any longer and I'm old enough to pick WDW over Disneyland.  I guess we'll see in a year from now.

Disney Springs

WDW confirmed to Cast Members a few weeks ago that there will be a huge renovation and expansion of Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island.

There are several different renderings and drawings of concepts but one thing they have settled on is that it will be "lush Florida" filled with water features, bridges and tons of plants.  They will be putting in a parking structure so they can expand into what space the current lots take up.  Here's a link:

I'm super excited about the changes to come.  I wanted to address some things that I stumbled across while I was reading related articles to this one.  I found it quite sad that so many people had bad things to say about the changes, and while posting here instead of on that blog, I will not got my points across to anyone but a few that follow me--but I'm fine with that--no need to have a debate with negative, unwavering negativity.

Complaint 1:  The shops that are conceptualized in the new Disney Springs may not be Disney ran.  One person went as far as saying that they will forever on only attend the CityWalk at Universal to stay true to the Franchise.
Truth 1:  Several of the shops in the existing Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island are not operated by Disney.  Rain Forest Cafe, La Nouba, and AMC are just a FEW of the places that are required to meet Disney standards to operate their chain.  Furthermore, only a handful of locations in Univeral's CityWalk are operated by the franchise, and the majority that are are revenue kiosks and not full store front locations.

Complaint 2:  The parking structures are going to create traffic when someone is waiting for a spot on level 2 when level 4 sits empty.  This will add to the walking and arrival times.  The towers will block views.
Truth 2:    Clearly this people have not been to Universal Studios period or Downtown Disney when it is slammed on a Saturday night.  When there is heavy incoming traffic, Universal guides traffic into spots and up and down levels just like Disney does on their flat lots.  When entry slows, levels are coned off to direct traffic to areas that are very much open.  I have never had to drive around looking for a spot in a Park parking structure.  If anything this will shorten arrival time since no one has to park all the way in the back and wait for a shuttle or walk a mile to the entrance.  Also, trying to park in Downtown Disney during a busy time is probably the only stressful experience I have ever had at WDW.  There is not enough parking in the lots that flank the length of the park and the places at the far ends are usually just as full.  The parking structure will add a huge amount of parking while creating space for additional shops and entertainment.  As far as blocking views and being an eyesore?  Since when has Disney allowed unsightliness to ever happen?  I'm sure they will work it into whatever design plan they have and make it disappear once you've left the structure.

Complaint 3:  The lush greenery and water features will crumble and not be well maintained.  They will be turned into dirt planters with small flowers.
Truth 3: What part of the Disney Parks are not well maintained?  With the increased amount of walking space they are adding the extra trees and water will be needed to minimize the heat associated with concrete and asphalt.  Think of Epcot when you arrive and it's grossly hot until you get the other side of the Spaceship Earth Geosphere.

So the only thing I'm not so excited about is the closing of Captain Jack's.  I know, I know: something great will be there and I'll never complain, but I'll still miss it.

Whatever happens, it will be Disney Fantastic.  Can't wait to see new developments.

Love at First Sight

I carry a purse.  But it's not what you think.  I carry it because, as a woman, my pants are not equipped with the proper pocket sizes to hold all the stuff I need to carry.  This includes two cell phones (one work, one personal), my wallet, checkbook, keys (I may have robbed a janitor in my sleep), sunglasses case,  chapstick, lipstick, my husband's inhalers, pain reliever, and  usually a water bottle.  I don't always carry a large purse.  Surprisingly, all this can fit in a pretty tiny satchel.

So now my case.  I was casually browsing Facebook.  Most of the Fan Pages I follow are Disney, scenic, inspirational, or Disney (so many Disney it needs double mention).  So when I came across The Relocated Tourist's Facebook post to win a Dooney and Bourke Mickey Barrel Bag..... Oh......my.....gowrsh!  This leads me to the blog page for Magical Mouse Plans Travel where I plan and work toward my new purse.

So here's my blog that is an entry.  I don't tweet so I can't maximize my entries, but I'll do what i can.

Here's to free purses!

Ever heard of Davenport?

Like I've said before we don't stay at Disney Resorts.  Don't get me wrong, the meal deals are great, the perks are wonderful, and obviously, the location can't be beat.  However, and this is a big however, it still costs less to rent a car, pay for all your meals, and stay off site.

We love Davenport.  Downtown Davenport is about 25 miles outside Walt Disney World but the outskirts of Davenport are where all the hidden deals are located.  You'll find the gates to Disney less than 10 miles away from some of the best Davenport rentals.  Also, most of the rentals don't require getting onto I-4, which depending on what time you leave the parks could ruin your day.  Of course, it's not traffic free, but anything is better than I-4.

So low-and-behold Regal Palms.  Trip Advisor states one owner rents from $47 to $114 per night for a 4 bedroom 4 bathroom condo that sleeps 11 people.  Really though with cleaning fees and resort fees and tax you're looking at (for a 5 night stay) $80 to $155 per night, but for 11 people, that's a steal.  Even for 4 people that's a great price.

Regal Palms is just one place.  There are houses, townhouses, and condos galore in Davenport.  We've stayed at the Bella Piazza for less than $70 a night in a 4 bedroom 3 bathroom that we actual split with another couple for less than $35 per night per couple. This is who we rented through. They even called to check to make sure everything was how it should be.  Free WI-FI too.

Vacation Rentals are high in scam rates.  So make sure to check out Trip Advisor for pictures, rates, and reviews.  You can also request information directly from here to properties as well.

Final note: If your kids (or you) really want a Disney theme room, don't despair.  Several off site rentals also decorate to accommodate the need for Mickey in the bedroom.  Just spend some time looking at pictures and asking questions.

Best of luck.

Finding Dory

Hooray! The sequel to Finding Nemo has been announced.  Finding Dory will release in 2015 and will feature the voice of the ever amazing Ellen DeGeneres.  More details to follow as soon as they are announced.  Ellen Returning for Finding Nemo Sequel

Planes

Best news last month for this movie is that Dane Cook will now be the voice of Dusty, the best crop plane ever!  The initial voice was going to be Jon Cryer........ almost a good choice.  But I feel a character he's playing should just be a little more whinny.  I mean, look at him.

And Dane Cook?  Besides the awful Farce of the Penguins, this will be his first voice over role.  He isn't the first actor I picture when I think of Disney.  He probably doesn't have a lot of wholesome thoughts, though I've heard he's kind, giving, and not an ass like he personifies quite often.

But I like him.  Want to hear him as Dusty for a quick second? Click the link under the picture below to be directed to YouTube for the new preview.  Enjoy.

Yay!

Bought our airfare last night to MCO.  Thanks Southwest for great deals.  We bought our tickets there but not back because they were having a great sale, and our return date hasn't been released for purchase yet.  One step, and one purchase closer to our 2013 Disney vacation!

Also this week:

Credit for pic--not mine

Tuesday my nephew and I watched The Reluctant Dragon.  An 1941 Disney movie about Robert Benchley going to the Disney Studios to pitch an idea for a cartoon.  However, like the Dragon of his story, he's reluctant.  The story follows him around the studio as he learns all about the animation process. . . . . in 1941.  The best part is how the movie starts in black and white but then colorizes as we learn more about animation.  My nephew is 5.  I wasn't sure how he would manage a black and white movie about an old guy.  Surprisingly, he sat through and watched the whole thing quietly.  In the end, Benchley learns that if you are reluctant, you may lose an opportunity.  If you haven't seen it, check it out.  I found it on Netflix

Pinteresting

One of the places I find to feed my addiction is Pinterest.  I can find all I need for travelling tips, park tips, silly food, fashion ideas, craft ideas, etc.  I thought it would be good to share my Disney Board.

A pin I found this morning that pretty much sums it up.

Make sure to follow me.  You'll find other nerdy Boards as well as recipes and other useful and useless treasures.

A Night out at La Nouba

At the far end of Downtown Disney--away from the bustle of most of the restaurants, but close to House of Blues and DisneyQuest is Cirque du Soleil's stage for La Nouba.  My husband and I first saw this show on our honeymoon.  He was reluctant to go, as most men are about stage shows, but now he recommends it as much as I.  It's a great chance for "a night out" amongst the rush of theme parks.

Since it is in Downtown Disney a proper night out should include dinner and drinks, either before or after.  We found ourselves eating at the Rain Forest Cafe (I was craving some tropical chicken) prior to the show then we were able to enjoy drinks at House of Blues at an outside bar afterwards.  With all the walking, its important to wear something that is classy yet functional.

I pulled this off a previous attempt at a blog.  Overlook the fact that this particular dress is $1,700.  For walking around DTD, getting dinner, seeing a show, and getting drinks this is perfect.  The flared dress is flirty enough for a date night but casual enough to blend with the other Disney visitors--not to mention it will fit nicely into a suitcase.

Let me know what you think.

A place it can be dumped, stored, and shared

In September 2010 my husband and I took an Orlando Honeymoon.  We went because the Wizarding World of Harry Potter had opened a few months prior and I am a huge Potter Head.  My husband, bless his heart, always finds time to be interested in most of the things I want to do.  We in Colorado but he is from Florida so he agreed that we could go to Orlando for Universal Studios and Disney as long as he got to take me to his hometown of Saint Augustine for a few days as well.  I of course agreed.  We had such an amazing time.  We visited 3 of the 4 Disney Park, both Universal Parks and spent a few days on the beach and in old town Saint Augustine.

While I had an amazing time every second we were there, I was really captured by Disney.  This was not my first time there.  I had been in 2000 for my Senior trip and had been to Disneyland countless times as a child.  What caught my attention was the completeness of Disney.  It's not a theme park, it's an experience.  Everything from where you sleep, what you eat, what you wear, and what you do can be Disney.  I've always been madly in love with Disney movies and shows.  Now its more than that.

In October 2011 we went back.  This time meeting some friends for a 9 days filled with Disney, Universal Studios, the beach, Discovery Cove, and SeaWorld.  Best trip ever.

In April 2012 we met him mom in Orlando and focused mostly on the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  We spent one day at Epcot, but we were tired and it was hot and crowded.  The week before Easter was not good timing for us.  Since then I've been trying to figure out when we can go back.  I want, no I need, the Disney Experience.  Disney stand for everything good.  No matter what is going on in the World, Disney is happiness.

So why a Disney outlet?  I've become obsessed.  I'm in the middle of planning another trip this September/October.  I have decided that my wardrobe needs a Disney inspired make-over, and I'm hoping to get my kitchen decorated in Mickey Mouse.  If you know me, you know I cherish the same type of Disney happiness in my life.  I want to surround myself with positive things.  I'd rather watch Hannah Montana than Crime TV, because I enjoy good wholesome family oriented fun.  It might be cheesey, but it expresses good morals, fun without bad language, violence, or crude/mistreating behavior.  I'm not blind to the world.  I'm well educated in politics and I keep up on world news.  But there is no need for me to sink into a life of drudgery because things beyond my control are not going as well as planned.

My husband and I do not have kids.  I have a nephew that we will take to California in 2014 and hopeful take to Florida for his first time in 2015.  He loves Cars, and enjoys Mickey.  He's super excited when he sees the trailer for Planes and his first movie theater experience was Brave-which he sat through at 2.

We've never stayed in Walt Disney World.  So many of the blogs I've read are all about which resort you've stayed in and which meal plans you've used.  We simply can't, or maybe just won't, afford that.  So here is the plan for my blog: keep track of park updates, explore vintage Disney and "what used to be." post movie trailers, add links to fashionable Disney bloggers, share classy home goods, post what I learn about booking affordable trips, and add links to crafts that are fun, safe, and healthy.  Basically a regurgitation of all the things I read and discover.

I've never kept a blog.  I work 45 hours a week and I go to school full time.  I'm super busy, but if I don't find someway to share my Disney obsession I'm going to drive my husband crazy!  I might a few days (weeks) without a post but it will come back ten fold when I catch up.

Here's to blogging and I hope you enjoy.
